Oddly enough, several police officers approached me after I got through customs and asked for my passport and then one of them began writing something in a notebook afterwards. It clearly wasn't a scam to get my passport, as they had appropriate identification, so I acquiesced. I'm not sure what that was all about! A employee of Yamasa picked me up from the airport, but as he clearly didn't speak any English, we didn't have much of a conversation on the way to the student residence.
The residence itself seems like it will definitely meet my needs. I can't say the room is up to Marriott standards, but the futon I had rented was waiting for me in the room, and was clean, so at least I was able to crash for the night. The heater/air conditioner works well, and there are extensive shared kitchen facilities and lots of toilet and shower stalls, which are both totally enclosed, offering more privacy than I ever experienced at the UVic dorms! You don't pay any utilities above and beyond the rent, and can use as much hot water as you like in the showers. I think something in my room is causing my allergies to act up though which is not so hot.
